The 7-Day Master Route: Day-by-Day

Mobirise

Let's skip the standard, copy-pasted travel brochures. If you are trying to map out a trip that catches Uganda’s iconic primate tracking alongside classic savannah big game, you have two choices: you can spend your limited holiday trapped inside a vehicle driving endless, looping highway segments, or you can route the trip intelligently from the ground up.
This 7-day circuit is engineered by local guides to maximize actual time in the bush. We’ve cut out the bloated transit days to create a clean, fluid line down through the central heritage hubs, into the high-altitude cloud forests of Bwindi for mountain gorillas, across the predator plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and straight down into the deep riverine walls of Kyambura Gorge for wild chimpanzees.

Day 1: The Long Run West from Kampala/Entebbe to Kibale Forest

Drive time: approximately 5–6 hours

We hit the tarmac early, picking you up directly from Entebbe International Airport (EBB) or your hotel in Kampala to beat the morning gridlock. Today is about clearing the distance to the western primate corridor. As we leave the central region, the urban bustle quickly transitions into the lush, rolling green tea plantations of Fort Portal, sitting right under the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains. We’ll wind our way into the edge of the Kibale rain forest canopy by late afternoon.

• Lodge Base: Kibale Forest Lodge / Crater Lakes Eco-Camp

• Road Time: Roughly 5 to 6 hours of steady, scenic driving.

• Pace: Unpack your gear, listen to the evening forest sounds, and rest up for tracking tomorrow.

Day 2

Chimpanzee Tracking and Bigodi Wetland & Community Walk.

We report to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Kanyanchu headquarters at 7:30 AM sharp for our tracking briefing. Kibale holds the highest density and diversity of primates in East Africa. Following your ranger guide deep into the rainforest canopy, you'll hear the chimpanzees long before you see them—their deafening pant-hoots echoing through the trees. You get exactly one hour to watch them groom, play, and swing through the branches.
After a hot local lunch, we head over to the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary on the edge of the forest. This community-run boardwalk trail is a premier swamp conservation site where we will track up to 8 different primate species on foot—including grey-cheeked mangabeys, red colobus, and L'Hoest's monkeys—alongside the massive, iridescent Great Blue Turaco and rare wetland birds.
• Lodge Base: Kibale Forest Lodge / Crater Lakes Eco-Camp
• The Highlight: Standing beneath a wild chimpanzee troop and exploring the vibrant birdlife of the Bigodi swamp channel.

Day 3

Moving to the Savannah Floor & Kazinga Channel Cruise

We pack the vehicle and take a short, beautiful drive down the Kasese road, crossing the Equator line as the dense jungle drops down into the wide savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park. We drive straight to the water for an afternoon boat cruise along the famous Kazinga Channel. This natural 32-kilometer waterway connects Lake Edward and Lake George, acting as a massive wildlife oasis. You will drift right past dense pools of wallowing hippos, herds of elephants cooling off at the water's edge, and giant Nile crocodiles sunning themselves on the mud banks.
• Lodge Base: Mweya Safari Lodge / Bush Lodge
• Food: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner sorted at the camp.

Day 4

Kasenyi Predator Tracks & Tree-Climbing Lions of Ishasha

We chase the first light across the Kasenyi Plains, a prime hunting ground for lions and leopards due to the massive populations of Uganda kob. Our custom 4x4 pop-up roof safari land cruiser gives you an unobstructed 360-degree view for tracking these big cats before they retreat from the midday heat.
From there, we head south toward the remote Ishasha Sector of the park. This specific landscape is globally famous for its unique population of tree-climbing lions. We’ll spend the afternoon scanning the heavy, low-slung branches of the old sycamore fig trees where these cats lounge away their afternoons to escape the ground heat and biting insects. After our game drive, instead of driving long hours out of the park, we return to the central sector of the park to maximize our time in the savannah.
• Lodge Base: Mweya Safari Lodge / Bush Lodge
• Road Time: Approx. 3 to 4 hours of slow, active game viewing tracks.

Day 5

Tracking Mountain Gorillas in the Ancient Jungle

We have breakfast with a view over the plains, pack the vehicle, and leave Queen Elizabeth National Park behind. We begin winding our way up into the massive, steep terraced mountain ridges of the Kigezi highlands, crossing into the ancient cloud forest boundaries of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by early afternoon.
Upon arrival, we step straight into history with the Batwa Cultural Experience along the forest edge. The Batwa are the ancient hunter-gatherer keepers of Bwindi, who lived in perfect harmony with the forest for generations. Led by local Batwa guides, you will follow a trail into the woods to see how they traditionally hunted, harvested wild honey, used medicinal plants, and built shelters, concluding with a powerful demonstration of their traditional songs and dances.
• Lodge Base: Bwindi Lodge / Sector-specific midrange or luxury camp
• Road Time: Around 4 to 5 hours from the savannah up to the cloud forest heights.

Day 6 -

Tracking Mountain Gorillas in the Ancient Jungle

This is the big one. We gather at the UWA park station at 7:30 AM for our mandatory group allocations and safety briefing. Bwindi holds roughly half of the planet's remaining wild mountain gorillas, and finding them requires a real, unscripted trek through thick vines, tangled roots, and slick mud. The hike can take anywhere from 2 hours to a grueling 5-hour mountain scramble depending on where the family moved.
The moment your guide clears the brush and you find yourself standing just meters from a massive, 200kg silverback, the physical burn completely disappears. You get exactly one hour to sit quietly, watch them break bamboo, interact, and take your photos before we track back out. We spend one more night on the forest edge to celebrate the trek.
• Lodge Base: Bwindi Lodge / Sector-specific camp
• Food: Early breakfast, packed pocket lunch inside the forest, and a heavy hot dinner back at camp.

Day 7

The Direct Overland Run to Entebbe Airport

We catch the sunrise breaking through the lake mist over the ridges, pack the 4x4 land cruiser early, and begin our final major road trip back to the central region. This is a long overland journey, but it cuts out any backtracking to maximize your holiday efficiency. We will drive straight out of the mountains, stopping for a hot lunch along the highway and making a brief leg-stretch at the Equator crossing landmark. We will pull directly into the Entebbe departures terminal by late afternoon, timed perfectly for your evening flight home.
• Food: Breakfast at the lodge, highway lunch included.
• Transit: Direct drop-off at Entebbe International Airport (EBB) for evening departures.

The Honest Math: Where Your Money Actually Goes

We don't hide our pricing structures behind vague, all-inclusive packages. On a budget trek, your biggest single expense is fixed by law, not by us:

• The UWA Tracking Permit: As of 2026, the official Uganda Wildlife Authority permit is $800 for Foreign Non-Residents. This fee is non-negotiable, paid directly to the government, and includes your park entrance, armed tracking rangers, and habitat conservation taxes.

• What We Handle: Your booking covers the actual transport logistics—a rugged 4x4 vehicle built for mountain roads, fuel, an experienced licensed local guide, two nights of lodge accommodation, and all meals listed on the route.

Critical Travel Notes •

Permit Availability: UWA only issues a limited number of gorilla permits per sector each day to protect the families. Because of this, budget slots fill up months in advance. If you have specific dates in mind, lock them in early so we can secure your passes before they sell out.

• Health Border Updates: You can leave the stress behind regarding entry paperwork—the Government of Uganda has officially abolished the mandatory Yellow Fever vaccination certificate requirement at border checkpoints. While health authorities still recommend it for general travel through East Africa, you no longer need to upload or verify a card to get your e-visa processed.
